How to Repair Wood Rot on Window Frames

Wood rot on window frames is a common problem for homeowners but with the proper tools it can be repaired! This blog post will help you identify the problems, and offer tips on how to repair them.

What is Wood Rot

Wood rot is a term for decay in the wood where fungi and other microorganisms attack the cellulose (the chemical composition of plant-based materials). It takes place when moisture seeps through the wood, softening it, causing the cellulose to break down…essentially decomposing and turning your windows into mulch.

How to repair wood rot on window frames (the DIY method)

If you want to do this yourself and have searched online for tips to repair wood rot, here is what you might have come across:

  1. Get your chisel and dig out the rot
  2. Buy [insert crazy expensive product here] and treat the timber
  3. Fill the hole with bog
  4. Sand it
  5. Paint it
  6. You’re done!

That might sound easy enough – and those steps are! But unfortunately, this is a waste of time and money. Our team are trained for over a year before they complete a job, solo, and that’s because it’s not easy. Wood rot hides in places you can’t see, and by completing the steps above, you’re never going to get all the rot. This means that over time (a week, a month, a year) the rot will come back. Wood rot spreads easily and rapidly through your windows so digging out the damaged part that you can see does nothing for the issue!

Imagine this: you prick your finger on a rusty nail. That wound starts bleeding and you treat that wound by washing it out with water, and putting a bandaid over it. What you’re not seeing is the bacteria running through your body, potentially causing Tetanus. A bandaid might be a simple fix and makes your finger look fixed, but unless you get a Tetanus shot, the problem is not solved. Stop the Rot is your Tetanus shot.

We take out the entire affected area and rebuild an exact replica! There can be no chance of the wood rot reappearing with every last microorganism in our bin. Our technicians are trained in joinery and joiners build new timber windows and doors.  We will be using our skills to rebuild your affected frames ‘in situ’.
